‘Splosion Man developer Twisted Pixel is once again an indie studio, reclaiming itself from Microsoft after it was purchased back in 2011. Creative Director Josh Bear said no bad blood existed between the two companies, and it was a mutually agreeable split.

“Microsoft has been an incredible partner since day one and we’ve always kept a background dialog open with them about the idea of returning to an independent studio model if the timing made sense for us.”

Microsoft chimed in to help spread the love.

“Twisted Pixel has been a great partner to Microsoft Studios, bringing a range of innovative new experiences to Xbox fans around the globe. I can’t wait to see what this talented team creates next.”

Twisted Pixel became well known after the release of indie hits The Maw and ‘Splosion Man, a couple of the first big indie titles available on consoles. Microsoft acquired the studio after the critical success of Ms. ‘Splosion Man in 2011.

It developed The Gunslinger and Lococyle under Microsoft’s wing, but the fanfare was far less than its previous hits. It’s worth mentioning though that The Gunslinger remains one of the best original Kinect games to date.

Twisted Pixel becoming independent again means that its games can now be released on multiple platforms. Hopefully, the original ‘Splosion Man finds a new release on Steam or next-gen consoles because it is stuck on the Xbox 360 and can’t be enjoyed any other possible way.

As for future games, the sky is the limit! I can’t wait to see what it does next, either.
